Security forces foil suicide attack in Somali town – police

MOGADISHU, Security forces foiled an attempt by Islamist militants to launch a suicide attack on a political conference in a central Somali town on Thursday, killing three gunmen and the driver of a car packed with explosives, police said.

“A suicide car bomb rammed into the gate of the hall and three armed men stormed in but, fortunately, AMISOM troops killed them before they could enter,” Major Nur Ahmed, a police officer, told Reuters, referring to the African Union force AMISOM which was guarding the conference hall in Adado.

Kenya to give licences back to 13 Somali money transfer

Nairobi, President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday said Kenya will grant licences to 13 money transfer firms who were banned in the wake of the Garissa university attack in April and whose names are on a list of 85 entities with links to Somalia’s al Shabaab.

The killing of 148 students by al Shabaab militants at Garissa, some 200 km (120 miles) from the border, had piled pressure on Kenyatta to deal with the Islamists who have killed more than 400 people in Kenya in the last two years.
